When the incumbent Lord Mayor Alfred Livingstone Parker died on 18 October 1935, McElhone was briefly the Lord Mayor from 22 October to 31 December 1935. He was elected for the remainder of the term expiring at the end of the year. During the election of Lord Mayor for 1936, McElhone was not nominated. A member on Council Committees: Labour Advisory (1901-1902); Parliamentary and By-Laws (1901-1902); Staff and Labour (1902-1903); Health and By-Laws (1902-1911, 1914-1915, and 1937-1938); Health and Recreations (1903 and 1939-1946); Electric Lighting (1901-1903 and 1905-1915); Street Signs Special Committee (1906); the Electric Supply (1922).
