Unique IDA-00045845SeriesCity Engineer's Photographic Negatives, 1953-1975Date7th December 1962Date qualifierexactFormatPhotograph - NegativeDescriptionLooking west from the top of St Mary's Cathedral towards the Archibald Memorial Fountain in Hyde Park, with to the right of the fountain the Christmas Tree, put in place at the northern end of Hyde Park, by the Sydney City Council for the 1962 Christmas celebrations. The tree came from the Oberon State Forest. Pedestrians are enjoying a walk in the park where concrete pathways lead in different directions for ease of walking. The light coloured building at the upper right is St James building at 107-111 Elizabeth Street. To its left is the David Jones department store at 113-133 Elizabeth Street. To the left of the David Jones store is Market Street, which leads off to the west to Darling Harbour and the Pyrmont Bridge. To the left of Market Street, on the corner with Elizabeth Street is the St James Hotel and to the left again at 141-143 Elizabeth Street is Newlands House. At the upper left is the dome on top of the Queen Victoria Building on George and Market Streets. To its right, the building with the oblong section sticking up is another David Jones store at 113-131 Castlereagh Street, on the corner of Market Street. Above that building is a radio tower on the roof of Cahills House at 458-462 George Street. At the upper centre can be seen the four chimneys at the Pyrmont Power Station.
