This mechanics' institute was officially opened on 21 August 1902 became known as the ‘Coal Lumpers’ Hall’ and colloquially as the ‘Louse House’, as it was primarily used by members of the Coal Lumpers’ Union as a centralised place for workers to wait for work, socialise and wash after their shift. The hall was acquired by council in 1956. It was remodelled in 1958 with plans prepared by Albert Smillie, Principal Architect in the Architect's Branch. An adjoining building was also constructed as council's first purpose-built amenities centre for aged persons. The adjoining building became known as the Harry Jensen Welfare Centre (formerly Welfare Centre no. 4) while the former Coal Lumpers' Hall was renamed the Abraham Mott Hall in 1958.LanguageEnglish (eng)Digitised recordNoGeographic location^[1]
