Women and International Women's Day

International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day is often used to bring attention to remaining issues concerning women such as gender parity.
The day has been celebrated since the early 1900s in some parts of the world. It was celebrated informally in Australia since the 1920s but gained more popularity during World War II. In the International Women's Year (1975) the United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day.
