It was hoped inmates would morally reform by working long hours in the laundry and through religious instruction. Of the 42 women admitted in 1900, 11 became domestic servants, 15 left willingly, 7 returned to their parents and 9 were sent to hospitals. This photograph is from a series of glass plate negatives showing buildings in the Devonshire Street resumption area, before they were cleared to make way for Central Railway.
