DescriptionLetter press copies of letters from City Surveyor's Office, written by City Surveyors William Henry Baron (resigned August 1857) and John R Roe (appointed October 1857). Subjects include city works, road repairs, kerbing and guttering, building specifications, encroachments, labour contracts, tendering, building of wharves, lighting and delivery of plans for the City Survey. City Surveyor correspondence dates from 1855 to 1858.

There is one letter at the end dated May 1860 written by Thomas A Butterfield for the Balmain Council to CE Langley, Pitt Street. Butterfield was Clerk in the City Surveyor's office from circa 1855 to 1859, thereafter in Town Clerk's office and Acting or Assistant Town Clerk until 1885. He was Balmain Council Clerk, 1860.
