Volume 2 is a letter press book originating in the City Surveyor's Office which contains index pages, paginated letter pages and an alphabetic index of letter addressees or issues contained in letters.DescriptionThis series consists of two volumes created by the City Engineer and City Surveyors Department I (AG-0086) between 1854 and 1860.

The first volume in this series was kept by the City Surveyor and City Engineer for various reasons. It contains letters received by the City Surveyor, letters sent by the City Engineer to the City Commissioners, and a register of water usage.

Tab alphabetical index at front containing street names refers to section [B].

[A] Pages 1 to 56 of Volume 1 contain letters received by the City Surveyor from 1854 to 1855 on various subjects including encroachments on public roads, water supply, road repairs, drains, and public baths. The letters are from the Colonial Secretary, the Inspector of Nuisances, the Colonial Architect and members of the public. Some of the letters were registered as part of AS-0026, Letters Received, but were sent to the City Surveyor for action and not placed with the rest of the letters received in AS-0026. For example, letter number 130/1854 from S Hordern about the water supply to Haymarket, has been indexed as part of CRS 26 but is in fact part of this series. This section has headings No, Date, When received, from whom, subject, when disposed of [mostly blank], how disposed of, [from p 14 additional column:] report; date range from 7 February 1854 to 29 December 1855; examination of entries leads to conclusion that the recipient is City Engineer.

[B] Pages 57 to 258 of Volume 1 contains a register of bonds. It is not clear from the volume what the bonds were for but it could have been related to water supply. The register covers George Street to Ultimo Street for 1858 and records the following details: number of bond; number of assessment book (there are no entries for this column); number of house (this is only completed occasionally); name; and number of rooms. There is an alphabetical index by street to this section at the front of the volume.

[C] Pages 300 to 303 of Volume 1 are headed "Letters". Following are copies of letters from City Engineer's office to the City Commissioners; date range is 24 September 1855 to 27 February 1856; 9 letters by WB Rider; one letter by Edward Bell.

[D] Pages 305 to 318 of Volume 1 are a register of 7 premises inspected by J Allum, Inspector of Water Services. Each double page is headed with a number, name, street, date; Date range 15 August 1859- February 1860; many columns empty; 7 persons identified. Column headings: Date of inspection; no of galls per indicator; signature of inspector; amount; when paid.

[E] Pages 525 to 527 of Volume 1 are a list of licensed plumbers. Details include date, name, residence, date of licence. Appears to be compiled in c1858 to May 1862; earliest licence date cited is in 1844.

Volume 2 is a letter press book originating in the City Surveyor's Office which contains index pages, paginated letter pages and an alphabetic index of letter addressees or issues contained in letters.

Pages 1-730 are letters from City Surveyor's Office; date range from 15 November 1855 to 25 August 1858.

Page 731 is a letter dated May 1860 written by Thos A Butterfield [Thomas A Butterfield] for the Balmain Council to CE Langley, Pitt St; Butterfield was Clerk in the City Surveyor's office from circa 1855 to circa 1859; thereafter in Town Clerk's office and Acting or Assistant Town Clerk to 1885; Balmain council Clerk 1860.

Pages 732-741 have been cut out.

Pages 742 to 751 are letter press receipts signed by Thos A Butterfield [Thomas A Butterfield], mostly for building fee issued from District Surveyor or Building Surveyor's office; date range September 1857 to November 1858 (book pages used in reverse order).
