Unique IDPC-000001Alternative titleKings Cross FountainCreator/ArchitectArtist: Bob WoodwardTypeFountainDescriptionThe El Alamein Fountain is located in the south-western edge of the Fitzroy Gardens in Elizabeth Bay / Potts Point (King Cross).
Designed by architect Robert Woodward (1923-2010), the fountain is a memorial to the Australian Imperial Forces 9th Division and commemorates the Battle of El Alamein, Egypt, in World War II. It is named for the Australian Infantry Forces (AIF) who fought near the Egyptian town of El Alamein.
Robert (Bob) Woodward was commissioned to build the fountain after winning the design competition held by the Sydney City Council in 1959. It was opened by Lord Mayor Harry Jensen on 18 November 1961. The blown thistle or dandelion design was immediately popular and a critical success.
The fountain won Woodward the New South Wales Institute of Architects Civic Design Award in 1964.External linksEl Alamein FountainSubject tagsFountainsWater Heritage statusState heritage register
