The name was approved by the Council on 13 June 1961. Other names considered included Battle of the Coral Sea. The file also includes history and background notes on the process and decisions surrounding the creation of the fountain, involving a design competition held by the Sydney Fountains Committee. Architects Woodward and Taranto of Bankstown were successful, with working drawings and specifications submitted for approval on 23 May 1960.
