Forest Lodge
This collection contains a small selection of archives relating to Forest Lodge.
Forest Lodge was named after a house located at the current site of 208-210 Bridge Road of the same name, built in 1836. This was the house of Ambrose Foss, a chemist and druggist.
By 1845 there were a number of villas in the area, and more were built in the 1850s and 1860s. From 1865 a subdivision of the Forest Lodge estate saw more development in the area. Many of the terraces date from the 1870s.
Forest Lodge was included in the Municipality of Glebe, proclaimed in 1859. In 1870, ratepayers petitioned Glebe Council to create a separate Forest Lodge ward and it was established in February 1871. It contained most of the Forest Lodge Estate within its boundaries, and a segment of the Bishopthorpe Estate.
The boundaries between Glebe and Forest Lodge have been fluid with some buildings formerly in Forest Lodge now in Glebe, such as the Glebe Town Hall. Currently the boundaries lie mainly along Ross Street including the Harold Park site at one end and Forest and Lodge Street plus Arundel Street and Catherine Street at the other.
As Forest Lodge has been part of Glebe and the boundaries have been fluid over time, also refer to the Glebe collection.
