Glebe
This collection contains a small selection of archives relating to Glebe.
For much of its history Glebe was not part of the City of Sydney local government area. A grant of 400 acres was made to the Church of England, known as ‘The Glebe’. It was outside of the City boundary which ended at Bay Street.
In 1856 the church sold some land and the suburb developed as a residential area. In 1859 Glebe Municipal Council was formed. There were three wards – Inner Glebe Ward, Outer Glebe Ward and Bishopthorpe Ward, with a fourth – Forest Lodge Ward – added later. The City Council was responsible for Parramatta Road and for some functions such as the provision of buses and introduction of electricity.
Glebe was amalgamated into the City of Sydney from 1949-1967 but then went to Leichhardt Municipal Council. When Leichhardt Council was abolished, Glebe returned to the City of Sydney in 2004.
As Forest Lodge has been part of Glebe and the boundaries have been fluid over time, also refer to the Forest Lodge collection.
