19th-Century Fashion
19th Century fashion, including the Victorian period.
Styles of dress changed due to developments in technology and material production, such as the availability of sewing machines and synthetic dyes, along with societal attitudes. Women's fashion periodicals with images of clothes and patterns influenced taste and created demand for garments. The rise of the department store, such as David Jones, Hordens, Farmers, Marcus Clark, and Grace Brothers in Sydney gave access to products.
The female silhouette was defined by corsets, crinolines and petticoats worn under bodices and skirts. Hats, bonnets and gloves were worn outdoors. Men wore top hats, waistcoats, high collared shirts with ties, frock coats and trousers. Beards and moustaches were popular.
