Edwardian Fashion to WWI
Edwardian fashion (La Belle Époque, circa 1890's to 1914) and the end of World War I in 1918.
The rise of the middle class saw a growth in consumerism with the expansion of department stores.
Clothing was increasingly factory made. Designs were characterised by a more tailored fit for women using lighter fabrics and embellishments of beading, lace, and feathers. Bustles disappeared and corsets were used to create an S figure, while the sleeves of blouses were enlarged. Wide brimmed hats were popular. Men fashion was more tailored and favoured dark colours. Three-piece lounge suits with bowler or cloth caps and moustaches were popular.
