South Sydney Municipal Council Forward Town Planning Department I

Unique IDAG-0022DescriptionFollowing investigation of the administrative difficulties experienced by the Town Planning and Development Department by a sub-committee of Council in December 1973, Council resolved to split the responsibility for town planning from routine processing of development and building applications. On 17 April, Council designated the then Director of the Town Planning and Development, Richard Orr, Director of Forward Town Planning. On 5 June 1974, Council formally abolished the old department and established the Forward Town Planning Department and the Development and Building Department in its place.

The new department of Forward Town Planning was physically split and relocated to the first floor of the Redfern Town Hall. On 26 July 1974 Richard Orr was formally confirmed as Director.

However the officer appointed to head the Development and Building Department resigned on 27 January 1975 and Richard Orr became the acting head of that Department in addition to being head of Forward Town Planning.

This unsatisfactory state of affairs was resolved on 4 June 1975 when Council decided to abolish the two departments and reamalgamate the two functions.
