South Sydney Municipal Council Forward Town Planning Department II

Unique IDAG-0023DescriptionOn 20 December 1978, Council resolved to separate for the second time the broad planning and development function from the routine processing of development and building applications. The Forward Town Planning Department II, headed by Richard Orr (first appointed to direct the town planning function in 1969), was established and located at 106-108 Erskineville Road, Erskineville.

The problem of lack of coordination of the planning and development function between the Forward Town Planning Department II and the Planning and Building Department persisted. When Mr Orr resigned in mid 1980 the Town Clerk prompted the investigation of the planning function. A series of reports by the Town Clerk, the Municipal Health Surveyor and the Director of Planning and Building were made to Council through the second half of 1980.

On 11 March 1981, Council adopted the Town Clerk's recommendation that the town planning and development functions be united in a new department of Town Planning. The building control function was proposed to go to the Health Department to form a new department of Health and Building.
