South Sydney Municipal Council Town Planning Department

Unique IDAG-0026DescriptionFollowing the resignation of the Director of Forward Town Planning, Mr Richard Orr, in mid 1980, Council sought reports on the issue of management and coordination of the planning and development function. After receiving reports from the Town Clerk, Municipal Health Surveyor and the Director of Planning, Council resolved to reamalgamate the planning and development function in a new department, Town Planning, and separate off the building control function. This passed to the Health Department which became the Health and Building Department (CA 18).

The new department of Town Planning was headed by Mr Brian Holland. Its location seems to have been split between 106-108 Erskineville Road and Waterloo Town Hall. The split location exacerbated the existing problems of staff shortages, poor accommodation and poor records management, so the new department continued to be subject to complaints of delays and administrative investigations.

The whole sorry saga of the town planning and development function of the South Sydney Municipal Council's administration came to an end when the Council was abolished at the end of 1981 and the area relocated inside the boundaries of Sydney City Council. The responsibility for the town planning and development control function passed to the City Planning and Building Department (CA 8), but it was some time before the officers and their records were physically located in the City administration.
