Health and Recreations Committee

Unique IDAG-0053DescriptionOn 3 April 1939 Council reorganised its standing committees. Management of the Municipal Library was transferred to CA 116, Health and By-Laws Committee, which was renamed the Health and Recreations Committee. The function of supervising by-laws was allocated to all the Committees, for their respective areas of responsibility.

The new structure was approved by the Governor of NSW and gazetted on 28 July 1939. The approval amended By-Law No. 1 - Proceedings of Council and Committees of Council. The Health and Recreations Committee had ten members.

In 1949, the Municipalities of Alexandria, Darlington, Erskineville, Newtown, Paddington, Redfern, the Glebe, and Waterloo, were amalgamated with Sydney City Council. During the second meeting of the expanded Council on 19 January 1949, it was decided to retain the four standing committees (Health & Recreations, Finance, Works, and City Planning & Improvements).

The Health & Recreations Committee was responsible for: implementing the provisions of Acts of Parliament, ordinances, and by-laws relating to public health; collection and disposal of garbage; management of the parks and reserve lands; the Citizen's Band; public baths; supervision and control of theatres, music halls, public resorts and amusement places; childrens' playgrounds and sandheaps in the City parks; the municipal libraries; and open-air sport and recreation.

The Health and Recreations Committee was replaced by CA 133, Community Services Committee I, on 7 October 1969.
