Health and By-Laws Committees
Unique IDAG-0116DescriptionFrom the late 1880s to 22 December 1898, CA 124, Finance Committee 1, which was a Committee of the whole Council, seems to have been responsible for everything but lighting. On 22 December 1898, Council decided that the work could be better controlled by a system of small Committees and appointed Finance and Works as standing Committees, Electric Lighting, <Garbage and Refuse Disposal, and By-Laws Revision>, as committees to deal with specific duties, and a General Purposes Committee to deal with special matters requiring a general discussion prior to adoption by Council. (Town Clerk's report 1898, page 13).
This Committee was responsible generally for supervising the carrying out of the provisions of any Acts of Parliament or Municipal by-laws affecting public health, dealing with petitions and complaints from persons affected by the by-laws, controlling the park and reserve lands under the control of the City, managing the public baths and bathing places, dealing with all matters relating to the collection and disposal of garbage.
On 13 December 1900 Council resolved to form five permanent Committees, Finance, Works, Parliamentary and By-Laws, Health, and Electric Lighting. On 13 December 1904 Council amalgamated the Health and By-Laws Committees.
On 3 April 1939 Council reorganised its standing committees. The Health and By-Laws Committee was renamed the Health and Recreations Committee.CreationResolution of Council 22 December 1898
