Unique IDAG-0080DescriptionThis Department was created as a result of a report by the Town Clerk into the administration of the service. The report recommended that the Properties Branch and the Valuations Branch of the Town Clerk's Department be combined to form a new Department, run by an officer called the City Valuer and Comptroller of Properties.
The new Department was responsible for assessment of all rateable property within the City of Sydney, in pursuance of the Sydney Corporation Act 1932-1942, including the preparation of assessment books for each ward of the City.
It also controlled and regulated Council's assets and properties, including the produce markets, the baths, the rental of Council properties, and maintenance of Council's machinery and plant.
The Department was abolished in 1947 when the head of the Department, F W Baird, retired and the person Council appointed to replace him, Charles Jackson, Assistant City Valuer, was too ill to take up the office.
