Unique IDAG-0104DescriptionThe Fund arose out of a meeting convened by the Lord Mayor in the Town Hall on 20 August 1914, and presided over by the Governor, Sir Gerald Strickland. The first meeting of the Fund was attended by the Prime Minister, Sir Edmund Barton, the Governor of NSW, the Lord Mayor, and others including Sir James Fairfax, Samuel Hordern, Sir W P Manning, the Town Clerk T H Nesbitt, and W G Layton, who became Town Clerk in 1924.
The Fund Committee was responsible for the granting of relief to wives, widows and other dependants of soldiers and sailors fighting in World War I from the date of their departure to the date of their return to NSW.
The Fund adopted a scale of weekly payments to dependants. It received money through public subscriptions and from time to time was supplemented by grants from the Federal Government.
