Electric Lighting Committee

Unique IDAG-0121DescriptionIn 1896 an Act was passed "to enable the Municipal Council of Sydney to light the streets with the Electric Light". Prior to the passing of this Act, on 15 October 1895, Council had appointed a special committee to consider and report on the question of lighting the City by electricity.

This Committee was dissolved on 22 December 1898 when it had finished its considerations and was replaced by a Committee to consider "the best means of lighting the City of Sydney by electricity; the supply of electric light for private purposes; and for the supply of electricity generally". This new Committee was not a standing committee of Council but met on an as required basis.

On 13 December 1900 Council resolved to form five permanent Committees, Finance, Works, Parliamentary and By-Laws, Health, and Electric Lighting. The Electric Lighting Committee was responsible for the supervision of the construction of a system of public and private power supply for the City of Sydney.

This included the construction of power stations and sub-stations, and the supply of electricity to Sydney and the outer suburbs.

After the passing of the Gas and Electricity Act, 1935, the function of electricity supply passed to the newly created Sydney County Council. However, a joint committee of the Sydney Municipal Council and the Sydney County Council was provided for under the provisions of the Act, so the Electricity Committee continued to report to Council until 30 October 1942 when it was finally abolished.CreationResolution of Council 22 December 1898AbolitionResolution of Council 10 August 1942 (Approved by Governor 30 October 1942)
