Unique IDAG-0115DescriptionThis was one of the first Committees appointed by Council. It was responsible for lighting the City through the laying of gas mains and the erection of gas lamps.
It does not appear to have kept minutes from 1842 to 1853 but presented numerous reports to Council which are contained in CRS 21, Committee Reports, 1842-1899.
From 1854 to 1856 when Council was replaced by City Commissioners, there was no Committee structure but the Commissioners carried on the work of the Lighting Committee. The Lighting Committee was re-appointed on 22 April 1857 when the Commissioners were replaced by an elected Council. The first meeting of this Committee was 18 June 1857.
The actual work of laying the gas mains and erecting the gas lamps was carried out by the Australian Gas Light Company. Most of the Committee's time was taken up with recommending sites for erection of new lamps in the City. The City Engineer, and from 1860, the City Surveyor, were called upon to report on the number of lamps required and whether the lamps were needed at all.
The last meeting of this Committee seems to have been on 15 September 1898. No reports were received at this meeting. In 1895, Council had appointed a special committee to look into the question of lighting the City by electricity rather than gas and appointed a standing Committee called the Electric Lighting Committee, CA 121 in 1900.CreationResolution of Council 30 November 1842AbolitionCeased meeting after 15 September 1898
