The papers were donated to Council's Archives in May 1983 after his death in April 1983, by his son David Shaw and daughter-in-law Jill Shaw. A large portion of his papers were also donated to the Archives of the Department of Main Roads (now the Roads and Traffic Authority Archives).

Most of the papers in this series relate to Shaw's work as the Deputy Commissioner, although some relate to his profession as an engineer and private interests. They include papers on the following subjects: ward divisions and boundary alterations; the Moore Park complex; Woolloomooloo Redevelopment; construction of parking stations; Circular Quay Redevelopment; inner Eastern Suburbs property development; shopping traffic in the City; Captain Cook Bicentenary Celebrations; homeless men; the Sydney Town Hall; naturalisation ceremonies; City Markets; the Scouts; and the Institute of Engineers. There are also some folders containing personal papers and records of his income.

Some of the publications in this series have been placed in the Sydney Reference Collection.
