The series was created by the City Engineers Department I (AG-0005). It is controlled by the City Engineers Plans Register (AS-1090) in the period 01/01/1925 to 01/01/1977. They are arranged by plan series, then numerically by plan or microfilm number.

The microfilm is stored in manila aperture cards and stamped 'Series 99 Microfilm of Plans'.

This series was created in 1977 when the City Engineer's Department arranged the microfilming of approximately 1200 plans by EBCO Microfilming onto silver halide microfilming transmounted on aperture cards. The Department later acquired a diazo microfilm duplicator to produce duplicate negative aperture cards.

The EBCO silver halide aperture cards comprise this series and the duplicate frames are held in the City Engineer's Department Plans Duplicate Negative Aperture Cards (AS-0526), Archives Reference Copy, 1977 [Contents: 1937-1977], and the Plans rooms of the City Engineer's Department in the Councils of the City of Sydney and South Sydney respectively.

The following series of plans are included in this series of Master Negative Aperture Cards:
- Engineering Survey
- Adopted Level (EIA)
- Drainage (EZ)
- Plans drawn by Government Departments (G1, G2)
- Alignment and Realignment (S2A, S3a)
- Survey Dedication (S2B, S3b)
- General Plans of Survey (S5)
- Survey Proposal (S6)
- Defined title/Subdivision (S7A, S7B, S7C)
- Original drawings on Linen.

Of these series, the following have not been refilmed: ES, EIA, E2, G1, G2, S2B, S3B, S5, S7A, S7B, S7C and Linens and therefore have no subsequent series.

In addition, there is one series of microfilmed plans created by South Sydney Municipal Council from 1968 to 1982. When that Council was created, the survey plans relating to its geographical area were transferred from the City Council.

The plans created by the South Sydney Municipal Council were controlled by an alphanumeric system different to that of the City Council. It consisted of a single letter prefix and consecutive plan numbers e.g. S1, S2, etc. Both the transferred plans and the Municipal Council plans were microfilmed, and the aperture cards were assigned a microfilm number (as opposed to the plan number). This sub-series of aperture cards are numbered from 100.

This series of aperture cards does not comply with the Evidence (Reproductions) Act, 1967 and are inadmissible as evidence in litigation. Under the Act the microfilm must include a certification signed by an approved person (the Town Clerk of the City of Sydney) stating that any document to which the certificate may relate is a document under the control of that approved person at the time the microfilm record was made. The EBCO aperture cards include a ‘good faith’ affidavit, however, this is insufficient under the Act.

In order to rectify this situation and guarantee that the microfilmed plans are admissible under the Act, a program to refilm all Council drawn plans commenced in 199l to include a certification signed by the Town Clerk. Those plans not created by Council were not refilmed on the basis that Council would not be required to present these plans as evidence. The subsequent series consists of all those refilmed plans.

The aperture cards are grouped into plan series however, the series are not arranged in any particular order. Within each series, the cards are arranged numerically by plan number (or microfilm number as explained above), the original drawings on linen are arranged numerically within plan size and there are two distinct size sequences: Imperial (foolscap, double and triple foolscap, elephant and double elephant) and metric (A1, 2, 3, 4,m A) etc.). In this series only some triple foolscap, elephant, double elephant, A1-4, B1 and A0 series of linens are included.

It is necessary to access this series in a number of ways:
-Those plans controlled by the City Engineer's Department alpha-numeric prefix are accessed through City Engineer's Department Street Index Cards (AS-0504) - Contents: 1856-1994.
- The original plans on linen are accessed through City Engineer's Department Old Tracings Cards Index (also in AS-0504).
- From 1908+ those plans transferred to South Sydney Municipal Council or created during the life of that Council are accessed through the Registers in the custody of the Plans Custodian, Council of the City of South Sydney.
