The later volumes include notices clipped from newspapers about acquisitions, resumptions etc. it is not clear when the volumes first began to be compiled but it appears to have been around 1906.
There are five volumes in the series.
Volume 1 is indexed alphabetically by subject at the front of the volume and its contents date from 1849 to 1927. The pages are numbered from 1 to 224. Where an entire copy of an Act is included, it is numbered as one page. The contents of Volume 1 include papers relating to: resumptions of land; alignment of streets; dedication of land; purchase and sale of land; by-laws from 1902 relating to bathing, civic costumes, common lodging houses, Queen Victoria Markets; parks,; porters and barrowmen, and public health; Sydney Hydraulic Power Company Act 1888; Public Health Act 1896; Cathedral Close Act 1869; Senate Committee on St Andrew's Cathedral Close Bill; 1869 act to erect buildings in Prince Alfred Park; Moore Street resumption. The clippings are often annotated by staff of the City Surveyor's Department. Occasionally there are references to CRS 34, Town Clerk's Correspondence Files, CRS 144, City Engineer's Correspondence Files and City Engineer's plans.
Volume 2 dates from 1913 to 1935, and paginated 1 to 269. It includes papers on: road openings and alignments; resumptions; Sydney Harbour Bridge Acts; by-laws on tents, the Municipal Library, regulating floor space and size of rooms in flats, Building Regulation: Composite Steel and Concrete and Steel Framing Construction, Band performances in Parks, regulation and control of signs, trade refuse, hoardings, illuminated signs, and barber shops; Acts including the Observatory Park Weather Bureau Site (Amendment) Act 1934; and proclamations of parks. The index for this volume is missing.
Volume 3 dates from 1935 to 1962 and has an alphabetical index by subject at the front of the volume. It is paginated from 1 to 315. It contains papers relating to: resumptions and acquisitions of land; by laws relating to the appointment of members to the Building Advisory Committee, public bathing, public monuments, memorials and statues, signs, Building Regulation (Light and Ventilation), and playgrounds; lists of employees transferred to the Sydney County Council in 1935; declarations of areas as residential districts; declarations of works for the relief of unemployment; amendments to ward boundaries; loan proposals for public conveniences, fish markets remodelling; Camperdown Park; resumption of land for public housing; Camperdown Cemetery Act 1945; trustees of Wentworth Park Glebe; County of Cumberland Scheme; stormwater channels; streets naming and renaming; Erskineville Oval; and ordinances relating to parking meters.
Volume 4 dates from 1962 to 1977 and is numbered 1 to 303. It has an alphabetical index by subject at the front of the volume. Some of the edges of the pages from the index are missing. It contains papers relating to resumptions, alignments, realignments, road clusures and openings, and light traffic thoroughfares; Ordinance 34b (Parking Stations), 71(Buildings); parks; planning schemes; stormwater drains; public housing; lists of employees and assets transferred to Leichhardt, Marrickville, Woollahra and Northcott (South Sydney) Councils in 1968; empoyees and staff transferred to the Sydney Markets Authority in 1969; City of Sydney Planning Scheme Ordinance 1971; stormwater drainage channels; regulations relating to the Domain and the Royal Botanic Gardens; naming of Brickfield Place, Church Hill, Campbell's Cove, The Rocks, Dawes Point, Millers Point, Regimental Square, Wharf House Steps and Queens Square; vesting of Town Hall site in the City of Sydney; acquisition of parts of Woolloomooloo by the Housing Commission; and Interim Development Orders.
Volume 5 dates from 1978 to 1989 and is numbered 1 to 267. It has an alphabetical index by subject at the front of the volume. It contains papes relating to road closures, resumptions, acquisitions, dedications, splays, street naming; heritage orders; interim development orders; interim conservation orders; naming of The Rocks Square; Australian Heritage Commission National Estate Register; street naming and renaming; naming of parks; Darling Harbour Authority Act; Sydney Local Environment Plans.
These volumes were removed from the City of Sydney when most of the engineering staff were transferred to South Sydney City Council in 1989. The volumes were returned in 2003.
