Building Inspectors' Cards, 1935-1997
Description
Unique IDAS-0135DateBetween 1st January 1935 and 21st April 1997Date qualifiercircaFormatCardShort descriptionThis series consists of cards that provide a summary of the history of each building application received by Council. DescriptionThese cards contain a summary of each building application received by Council. Any person or company intending to carry out building works on their property must submit a building application to Council, detailing the work to be carried out. If the application is approved, a building inspector will carry out periodic checks to ensure the work is in line with the approval.
They were created by:
- Planning and Building Department (AG-0008) in the period 25/10/1971 to 31/12/1992
- City Architect and Building Surveyors Department II (AG-0016) in the period 01/06/1936 to 25/10/1971
- City Engineering and Building Surveyors Department (AG-0061) in the period 01/01/1935 to 01/06/1936
- City Development AG-0135 in the period 01/01/1993 to 21/04/1997.
They are controlled by the Building Application Registers AS-0122 in the period 01/01/1935 to 31/12/1993.
These cards record the building application number, names of the applicant, architect, builder and engineer, the location of the work, estimated cost, a description of the work, dates of approval or disapproval, dates and details of inspections, and the date of completion of the work.
The same building application number is given to the cards in this series, the building application files in AS-0059, AS-0116, and AS-0326, and the plans in Building Application Plans (AS-0126).
It is not clear when this series began. There is one surviving card from 1935, but the rest of the cards date from 1941. However, if they began the same year as Building Application Files (AS-0059), then the series would have begun in 1908. Building application files from 1908 to 1940 were destroyed by the Planning Department in 1952, so it is likely that the cards from 1908 to 1940 were also destroyed. (AS-0138, CBS DF 1281/1951).
In 1982, building application files from 1941 to 1978 dealing with minor works were destroyed by Council's Archivist when records had to be shifted from the Queen Victoria Building (AS-0116, 19.16.0091). The cards in this series and the plans in Building Application Plans (AS-0126), provide a summary of action for the files that have been destroyed from 1941 to 1978.
By April 1997, the use of inspector’s cards ceased and all information normally recorded in inspector’s cards is noted in the relevant file. Instead of the card, Council started issuing occupation certificates after the completion of work covered in a building application.
The dates in this series are surviving content dates. Series dates likely to be 01/01/1908 to 21/04/1997.Relationship summaryRELATED TO: Building applications inspection and approval AY-0028 (01/01/1935 to 21/04/1997)LanguageEnglish (eng)
