Files are raised in compensation cases where the employee takes time off work as a result of an injury sustained at work. Claims where no time is lost are not registered.

The registers are divided alphabetically. Claims are registered according to the surname of the employee in year groups. The details recorded are: claim number, surname and initial of the employee (claimant), date of the injury and the complaint (description of the injury). There is also a remarks column which is only rarely used. The claim number is taken from the file cover (numbers are pre-printed on the cover) and the rest of the details from the Personal Injury Report which is the initiating document for a compensation claim. When claims are finalised (all payments due have been made) the entry is annotated with the initial ‘F’ in red ink. The year is written at the top of the page with the columns ruled below, each year being ruled off. The registers, being alphabetical are the main means of access to Workers' Compensation Files (AS-0146).

The earliest registers (1920 to 1930s) record the name and sick pay claim numbers. From 1921, the name of the department by which the employee was employed was added. The early registers are called 'Sick/Accident Pay Claims Register', the title 'Workers Compensation Registers' not appearing until 1954 (in volumes extant). During the 1930s (1931-1937) the inside title page is inscribed 'Records Branch of Town Clerk's Department'.

From the 1950s the registers span several years within the one volume and the employees' pay numbers are recorded (evidently the pay number system was introduced between 1949 and 1954). In 1957, the practice of recording the injury was introduced, so the current format dates from this period. These volumes are more substantial that the early ones are quarter bound in half.
