Industrial and Personnel Department

Unique IDAG-0090DescriptionThis Department was responsible for the following: negotiation, fixing and drafting of awards, salaries, wages and conditions for Council employees; administration of the provisions of the Workers Compensation Act 1926; creation and maintenance of staff records; investigation of sick leave claims; and calculation of salaries and wages. The Department also managed the distribution of the Christmas relief work funds, until this outlay ceased at the end of the 1968 season.

The Department was created by a Resolution of Council on 20 March 1961. It took over the industrial function from the Town Clerk's Department. It was not responsible for the actual payment of salaries, this function was administered by the Paymaster's Branch of CA 12, City Treasury Department I. (CRS 34, TC 6472/1960).

In 1971, the name of the Department was changed to the Industrial Relations Department and it acquired two new functions. These were responsibility for staff training, which does not appear to have been addressed by Council prior to this time, and the keeping of statistics relating to staff safety, which were required of employers by the National Safety Council.
