Plans of Moore Park Destructor by Contractors, 1901-1910
Description
Unique IDAS-0416DateBetween 1st January 1901 and 1st January 1910Date qualifiercircaFormatPlanDescriptionThis series contains plans, sections, details and elevations of the original Moore Park Destructor built in 1901 and later additions to the complex.
The construction of a destructor is suggested in the Annual Report of the Town Clerk for 1898 as an alternative to dumping rubbish at Moore Park. In 1901, upon recommendation of the Health Committee, a quote by the English firm Goddard, Massey and Warner to provide as "Perfectus" Destructor for the City of Sydney was accepted. The bulk of the plans in this series are drawn by this firm.
The plans include drawings of the destructor and details of components designed to incinerate garbage at a low temperature with a guaranteed capacity of 10 tons per cell for 24 working hours (with a total of 6 cells). The destructor was put into commission on 25 April 1902.
Also included in this series are plans prepared for the erection of a unit of six additional cells adjacent to the existing destructor, this work was completed in 1909.
Council decided in 1914 to reconstruct both units, replacing the existing boilers with Babock and Wilcox boilers, work was completed in 1915 and resulted in an increase in capacity to 102 tons of garbage per day. Additional work in 1918 involved the installation of a light railway system for conveyance of clinker and ashes direct from the fires to a tip in Moore park. The plans for this work have not been located. The destructor continued full operation until 1929 when the bulk of refuse disposal was taken over by the Pyrmont complex. By 1933 Moore Park Destructor had become obsolete.
The plans were found wrapped in five bundles. The original arrangement in these bundles has not been altered. Some of the plans are in their original format, others are copies. The plans appear as various media including linen, paper and blueprint, all plans listed in bundle 4 are drawn on linen. Some of the plans are signed by the City Engineer, others by the City Surveyor, the plans drawn by contractors are identified as such.
