Pyrmont Destructor Plans drawn by Hughes and Sterling, 1909-1910

Unique IDAS-0417DateBetween 5th November 1909 and 5th August 1910Date qualifiercircaFormatPlanDescriptionThis series of plans, sections and elevations depict the first Refuse Destructor erected at Bank Street, Pyrmont. Approval to purchase the site for a destructor appears in a minute from the Lord Mayor dated 9 February 1909. The land was resumed in May and tenders called in June of that year. An English firm, Messrs Hughes and Sterling, won the tender, and construction of the front feed Sterling type of incinerator with a capacity of 90 to 100 tons of refuse per day, commenced in September 1910. Work was completed on 11 May 911. The Destructor became a major complex for refuse destruction for the City of Sydney.

All of the plans in this series (with one exception) are originals drawn on paper and hand coloured. The exception is Number 010227 which is a blueprint.
