City Surveyor's Specifications, 1865-1927

Unique IDAS-0901DateBetween 1st January 1865 and 1st January 1927Date qualifiercircaFormatVolume - Leather BoundDescriptionThis series comprises the City Surveyor's office copies of specifications drawn up for the provision of goods and services by outside bodies from 1865 to 1927.

The volumes are indexed alphabetically by subject or street name at the front of each volume. Most of the volumes are letter books, and copies of some of the specifications appear in CRS 900, City Surveyor's Contracts, 1868 to 1956.

Sometimes a linen plan, blueprint or coloured plan is included with the specification.

Part of the first volume, which covers 1865 to 1867, has a numbering system for the specifications which runs from 302 to 350. However, the numbering covers only half of the specifications. From 1879 to 1911 the specifications are given a annual single number which corresponds to the contract numbers in CRS 900.

Most of the specifications were for roadworks and other activities associated with the work of the City Surveyor's Department. This includes: constructing a dam at Botany, steps at Circular Quay, erecting fences and retaining walls, lighting the new fruit markets, iron frame work for the new Town Hall, work at the Gentlemens' Baths at Woolloomooloo, laying pavements, and supplying blue metal and woodblocks.

Item 10 contains contracts that were let yearly for goods needed on a continuing basis, such as coal and woodblocks. Item 11 contains miscellaneous specifications, including preparation of the assessment books in 1888, supply of water carts, the superstructure of the Queen Victoria Building, and supply of pea gravel.
