Plans of Engineering and Survey Standards (E3), 1856-1999

The drawings include plans, sections and elevations of steps, bridges, streets and some buildings and record the level (height above sea level), building lines and high water marks. This information was recorded to facilitate resurfacing of streets, covering of footways and construction, and construction details for public baths.

The plans include annotations, specification references, approval and other dates and relevant signatures.

The earliest drawings consist mainly of construction details and officers in the Department refer to the series as "Old Construction Detail" plans. The later plans consist of new alignment level drawings.

All plans in this series were microfilmed as part of the microfilming of City Engineer's Plans Project in 1991, and the master microfilm is contained in CRS 467. In accordance with the City Engineer's Department Disposal Schedule, all original drawings, pre-1900 plans, and plans unable to be adequately microfilmed have been conserved and retained in their original format in this series.

The plans are arranged numerically by plan number consisting of an E3 prefix followed by a plan number and consecutive sheet number. A new plan number is assigned to each job (a job could be part of a street, set of steps, a bridge, footway etc) and subsequent drawings for that job are assigned a sheet number. Access to the plans is by street name in CRS 504, Street Index Cards.

When the Council of the City of South Sydney was created, the City Engineer's plan collection was split and plans relating to South Sydney City streets were transferred to the South Sydney plans room. Plans of Engineering and Survey standards created by Sydney City Council after 1988 are all assigned an E3-82, E3-337 or E3-405 prefix.
