Plans of private land sales cover the breakup and subdivision of estates in the Potts Point and Elizabeth Bay areas in particular, the Harris estate in Ultimo, and also the Centennial Park lands. Government land sales include lands at Observatory Hill and around Central Railway Station. Council land sales include most of the major resumptions and redevelopment projects including Martin Place, Ultimo and Pyrmont, the Haymarket area (between George St and Darling Harbour) Wentworth Avenue and Brisbane Street, Surry Hills, Blackwattle and Chippendale, Broadway (George St West), and Oxford St.

A few of the plans were created for official survey purposes rather than as land sale advertisements. They include 1865-66 plans of Woolloomooloo showing the original subdivision (S7C-48/1,2) and an 1873 plan of part of the Riley Estate (S7C-49/1).

The plans appear to have been collected by the City Surveyor for survey reference purposes rather than as a record of land sales.

Typically the plans fulfilled the purpose of advertisements for the freehold/leasehold auctions, and also the legal requirement to provide survey information to prospective buyers. The plans contain maps drawn by registered surveyors showing the boundaries and dimensions of blocks offered for sale, road frontages, and sometimes building lines and the footprints of existing buildings on the land or in the vicinity. Some plans also contain a locality map showing the relationship of the lands for sale to surrounding areas and amenities.

Some of the plans have evidence of former control numbering systems on the backs, as single numbers or alphanumerical codes in black ink.

Most of the plans have been backed onto cloth. The overall condition of the plans is only fair, and they should not be handled unless the microfilm copies are not adequate for access purposes. Microfilm (as aperture cards) is available for all plans with S7C prefixes, but not the few which have been given 494/ numbers.
