The Rate Books are printed from the Rate (computer) file which records the rates payable on properties and all financial transactions relating to the payment of rates.

The printouts for 1989 are headed: Report P1. The Council of the City of Sydney-Rate Books - Rates levied for the year posted (date), due date and page no.," There are two columns of entries. For each entry the following information is recorded: name and postal address of the ratepayer; assessment number; address of property being rated; date of service of rate notice; valuation for rating purposes; rate (in the dollar); current rates payable; credit (if any); total payment due.

The Council of the City of South Sydney was formed when the Council of the City of Sydney was split in 1989. Under cross-servicing arrangements agreed to at the time of the split, the Council of the City of Sydney provided computer services for South Sydney, including the provision of computerised Rate and Valuation Books. This is why South Sydney Council's Rate and Valuation Books are labelled Council of the City of Sydney.

The format of the print-out changed slightly from 1990. The print-outs list the assessment number, ratepayer/agent address, Valuer-General's description, instalments due, date due, interest rate, arrears (if any), and total due.

The rate books were handed back to South Sydney City Council in 1993 when cross-servicing arrangements between the two Councils were terminated. It is not known what happened to the paper records that formed this series.
