Register of Moore Street (Martin Place) Improvement Contributions

Moore Street was widened and closed to vehicular traffic and is now known as Martin Place. The improvements were carried out in several stages and were partly funded by these contributions.

Council was empowered to collect these contributions for a period of one hundred years under the Moore Street Improvement Act of 1890. Inside the front cover of the volume two plans of the Improvements have been pasted. One is a "Plan Showing Moore Street Betterment Area" and signed by the City Surveyor R W Richards on 18 October 1892. The other plan shows the same area and was signed by the City Surveyor A H Brigg on 11 September 1918.

There were 41 properties in the area and the register shows the annual contributions made by the owners of these 41 properties from 1892 to 1987. The details recorded are the property number as shown on the plans, situation of the property, name of the owner, annual payment, and date paid.

The Register finishes in 1987. Entries for 1990 to 1992 have been placed loosely inside the back cover of the volume. The pages for 1987 and 1988 appear to be missing. Contributions ceased to be levied after 1992.
