There are also a small number of photographic prints, in colour and black and white format.
Most of the images are of festival events and activities, eg theatre, art, sport, concerts in the Domain, family and children's activities, parades, Wine and Diners Club, Australia Day ceremonies etc and show the public, performers and dignitaries at those events.
Other slides are the publicity photographs of artists and productions while others illustrate festival publicity around the city in the form of banners, posters, signage and the information centre. The first Opera in the Park was 1982; the first Symphony in the Park 1983; first Bacardi Club Festival 1987; first Motorfest 1986. These festival events have been held each year since their inauguration and slides of these events are also in the collection. There are also some 1988 ‘Special Bicentennial Events’ slides in the collection.
A few of the 1990s slides came from Artist Information Kits (created/held by the Festival Committee).
The list of slides is arranged as follows:
(1) 1977-96 slides arranged in chronological order with a running number
(2) Carnivale slides 1985, 1987-88, 1990-93 with a running number; and
(3) 1985-90 slides arranged chronologically with a specific year + letter + number system.
The first group of slides, 1977-96, were subject to a variety of arrangements. Over the years the 1977-84 slides became interfiled. Consequently the dates 1977, 1978, 1981, 1982 and 1984 in the list are highly likely to be correct but in some cases cannot be verified. The 1982 slides appear to have had two systems of arrangement: sleeve items 0073-0088 were kept alphabetically by subject while sleeve items 0089-0102 were arranged by running number sequence (whether this was imposed currently or, as some slides appear mislabelled as 1981, 1984, etc, at a later date is not known). Where the list date appears as 1977-1978, it means the date is likely to be either 1977 and/or 1978. This also applies to the slides indicated, for example, as 1977-1980: the slides could relate to any of the Festivals from 1977 to 1980. The 1985 slides appear to have been arranged by subject and formed the collections of two or more staff members. The 1986-1990 slides were interfiled and mixed over time with the 1985 slides. The 1992, 1994 and 1996 slides were retained in their chronological groupings and arranged by subject.
The second group of slides, comprising chronological groupings of the 1987-88 and 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1993 Carnivale slides, remained relatively intact over the years. The date 1987-1988 has been ascribed as it is not known if the slides are 1987 or 1988 or a mixture of both years (a few slides are labelled 1987, a few others 1988 while others are not labelled at all). As with the 1991 Carnivale slides, the 1987-1988 sleeves were assigned an alphabetical letter and each slide then labelled with the sleeve letter and a single number eg. A10, G5, K7 etc. Where some 1991 subjects eg Blessing of the Fleet, occupy more than one sleeve, so the numbers run on from one sleeve to the next. It appears the 1987-1988 system may have been a later attempt at arrangement, partly because the collection appears to have been split at one time. Some 1987-88 slides are similar and relate to the same subject. However, while some have been labelled and numbered, others similar have not. The unnumbered slides have been placed into trays labelled 'Miscellaneous'.
The third group of slides, running from 1985-1990 were kept arranged according to a year/letter/number filing system eg 1988 M 1/1, 1988 M 2/1, 1988 M 3/1 etc. Each new number following the letter denotes a new sub-category under the main category so that in the above example M is the Bacardi Club category with 1/1 relating to performers, 2/1 audience and 3/1 signage. This system appears to have been started in 1986 with an attempt to backdate 1985. Some slides labelled 1985 are 1985, others appear labelled 1985 in error and the majority of 1985 slides - held in the collections of two or so staff members - were not subject to this year/letter/number system of arrangement at all. Where the slide is obviously not 1985 but another year, then it has been removed and placed in the other year.
The 1985-1990 group of slides is incomplete eg under 1988 sleeves F and H are missing etc.
Throughout the slide list, in each item title/description field, the quantity of slides in the sleeve appears in brackets after the title/description. Often, Festival of Sydney staff individually numbered the slides in sleeves. Where, for example, [slides 1-24] or [slides 1-5, 8-24] is shown, it means the sleeve contains slides numbered from 1 to 24 or 1 to 5 and 8-24. Where [21 slides] or [7 slides] for example, is shown it means the sleeve contains 21 unnumbered slides or 7 unnumbered slides etc.
Photographers used by the Festival Committee included Joyce Agee, Jenny Templin, Tom Koprowski, J Vissel, J Ahearn, Steven Richardson, R Turner, B. Cochran, Gerrit Fokkemar, Jon Irwin, Rob Tuckwell and R Hodgekinson. The photographer is usually identified either on the slide sleeve or on individual slides. Not all sleeves or slides identify the photographer.
