The front of each card records information about the building including address, construction materials and fire safety measures. The cards were created by the City Architect and Building Surveyors Department II (AG-0016) in the period circa 20/01/1973 to 01/07/1974).

It is possible that they were created in response to the gazetting of Ordinance 70, Building, on 20 June 1973. This Ordinance took effect on 1 July 1974 and contained requirements imposed on buildings in the interests of safety, health and amenity of the community that uses them.

These cards cover buildings that already existed at the time of the gazettal. Interim Building Classification Cards (AS-1034) contains cards for buildings erected after the gazettal.

The front of each card records the following information: address, building name, site area, typical floor area, total floor plan area, material and type of footings, construction type (eg framed fireproof), supports, walls (eg besser block), roof (eg reinforced concrete), material used in each floor and use of each floor (eg car parking, shops, offices), mechanical ventilation, air conditioning, sprinkler/thermal fire alarm installation, restrictions covenants etc, approved non-masonry partitions, and fire stair details (eg which floors served, construction material, isolated).

The back of each card contains a site plan, a hand-drawn and coloured floor plan which pays particular attention to stairs and toilet location, building height, a list of building applications (sometimes the original development application) lodged for the building, date of commencement and completion of original building. Some of the larger plans also show road closures, widenings and rights of way. Some cards also show sections and elevations of buildings.

Each card is identified and ordered by a primary and secondary numbering scheme (eg 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2).
