The Municipal Markets number 1 is on the left and the building past the workmen is the Engineers Hotel which was renamed the Covent Gardens Hotel. Chimneys in the background are the Ultimo Power Station. On the right is Babcock and Wilcox at 427-429 Sussex Street. The Great Western Coffee Palace was designed by the City Architect and built by the Sydney City Council as a Temperance Hotel on land resumed for slum clearance. It became a licensed hotel in 1916, and was converted into the Kien Hay Centre and Burlington Centre 431-439 Sussex Street containing retail and offices, in the 1980s.
