The Italian Ambassador F Belgiorno-Nettis wrote in 1974 of the desire of the Italian Community to donate a sculpture to commemorate the Centenary of the birth of Guglielmo Marconi, who on 3rd October 1930 illuminated by radio wave Sydney Town Hall.

The Council's Advisory Art Panel selected Mike Kitching as artist for the sculpture.

The Italian Ambassador suggested the sculpture be located at the southern face of Sydney Town Hall as a contrast between the traditional line of the Town Hall and the adjacent St Andrews, with the modern buildings being developed. Correspondence includes discussion of tenders, costs and insurance.

File includes:
- Invitation from Lord Mayor Leo Port and Lady Mayoress to reception at Sydney Town Hall for the official unveiling of the sculpture on 28 October 1978;
- photographs of marquette of the artwork, pages 122 to 126;
- text for dedication plaque mounted by Ken Woolley, from architecture firm Anchor Mortlock & Woolley Pty Ltd;
- a list of the individuals and organisations who contributed towards the cost of the Marconi Sculpture;
