Unique IDA-00280417SeriesTown Clerk's Correspondence Folders, 1899-1913DateBetween 6th September 1901 and 21st January 1902Date qualifierexactFormatRegistered File - PhysicalDescriptionThis file contains internal correspondence between the City Surveyor (William Gordon) and the City Building Surveyor (R H Brodrick) between 6 September 1901 and 22 January 1902 regarding council’s practice of taking photographs of ‘premises condemned’ under Sections 78 and 79 of the Sydney Corporation Act 1879. The file was created in response to a meeting of the Finance Committee on 1 August 1901, which recommended that competitive prices be obtained for photographs of condemned buildings. On 22 January 1902, in a memo from the City Surveyor to City Building Surveyor, Surveyor Gordon recommended the continuation of photographic work. The following day, on 23 January 1902, R H Broderick made an Officer’s Report, stating ‘I consider it not only advisable but absolutely necessary to obtain photographs of all buildings condemned under powers of the council, for purposes of identification as exhibits in case of possible subsequent disputes, and as a record of the external condition of the premises at the date of service of notice requiring demolition of same. I concur with the opinion of the City Surveyor, and strongly recommend that the requisite photographs be taken of all places condemned, and prior to demolition’. The report was accepted at the Finance Committee meeting on 6 February 1902, and the matter of expenditure was left to the discretion of the Town Clerk. Mr Kent from Murrell & Co (sic) and a Mr Johnson were the photographers hired by the council between 1900 and 1902.
