Unique IDA-00436892SeriesReports of the Finance Committee I, 1857-1898 [Municipal Council of Sydney]DateBetween 14th September 1885 and 9th September 1886FormatVolume - Leather BoundDescriptionReport of the Finance Committee recommending that Stream and Levey Streets be formed etc, continued: Report from GF Dansey, City Health Officer and R Seymour, Inspector of Nuisances, on the condition of the block of ground situated between Regent & Cleveland Sts, Newton Road and George St West with details of cleanliness, drainage and sewerage for streets and residences including the following: Goold St (houses owned by Mr Bull and Mrs Thompson); Yeends Lane off George St West (stable yards of Mrs Ryan, premises of Arthur Scarlet); Belvoir St an open space once known as Linden Lane property (stable of Edward Pendergast, yard owned by Mr W McDonald); two lanes between O'Connor and Irving Sts unformed and dirty; Abercrombie St (yard used as stable by Mr Irvine; insufficient closet accommodation); west of Abercrombie St, a lane for use as back entrance to St Edward's Convent and a terrace, bordering residence of head master of the Public School in Blackfriars Estate, unformed and filthy; another similar lane between McCullochs buildings in George St West and Messrs Riley Bros Cordial Manufactory; cellar of No 118 McCullochs buildings flooded; other parts of Blackfriars Estate had pools of stagnant water etc from Moorgate, Buckland, Knox, Shepherd, Pine, O'Connor and other streets plus dirty soapy water from the laundry of the Blue Ribbon Army in Knox St; George St West (terrace of shops owned by Mr Ritchie); lane at back of Clyde Terrace (property of Messrs Boyd & King) in Shepherd St; Rose St (Palace View Terrace, workshop, timber yard and dwellings); corner Rose Lane and Rose St projecting drain pipes; end of Beaumont St, junction Myrtle & Wattle Sts; Stream St (terrace of 14 houses owned by Simeon Brown); unformed road at southern end of Blackfriars Estate, continuation of Pine St; Blackfriars Estate has population of over 5600, Public and Roman Catholic schools and Convent with average daily attendance of 2486 pupils and teachers; there are "dangerous lagoons of stagnant, festering, fetid matter" and immediate action is required.
