It appears the Mr Baron was appointed as Assistant Engineer on the 1st of April 1854, with a salary of £300 per annum, and that the Survey was confided to his care at that time. The work which he has performed in connection with the Survey since his appointment as City Surveyor (January 1855) has always been considered as extra to the duties of that office and Mr Baron received a gratuity of £50 for that service in 1855. The hours of attendance at the office are from 10 until 4 but of course the outdoor duties of the Surveyor keep him employed beyond these hours. Mr Baron's present salary is £400 per annum. His predecessor received £575 and was allowed an Assistant, which latter office has been abolished since Mr Baron's appointment:CWW, Secty, 9/2/57. I would recommend that the same amount of gratuity which was given to Mr Baron, the City Surveyor, for his services on the Trigonometrical Survey in 1855 should be awarded to him for the past year to 31st Dec as it appears that this service was considered to be extra:EB;12/2/57.
