[Note: 18/10/59 Upon enquiry I find that the posts have received the paint intended to be put on, & that there are only between 5 & 6 cwt of lead in the whole. Will you be good enough to give me a more lucid explanation as to the action of the water upon these columns, that I may place it before that Water Comttee tomorrow as the matter seems pressing: GS] Followed by a lengthy memo dated 20 Oct from H Graham explaining that this earlier memo was prompted by a letter in the Sydney Morning Herald titled Lead Poisoning, etc. which was mischievious, and that on questioning during his visit to the Crown St Reservoir it appears that the lead paint is mixed with a large quantity of boiled oil which almost forms a varnish and with the fact that no air is likely to reach these 176 pillars once the reservoir fills it is unlikely that it will cause a problem, and apologizes for his earlier memo.
