In 1937, Sydney Ure Smith gave this charcoal drawing of the Hyde Park Barracks and 10 etchings of Old Sydney to Council. His inspiration came from the threat to the buildings and landscapes as a consequence of redevelopment. He campaigned particularly against the Macquarie Street Replanning Committee's recommendation for the demolition of the Hyde Park Barracks to extend King Street eastwards. His donation of the Hyde Park Barracks drawing was intended to urging Council to 'induce members of the Council to fight for its retention'. Council opposed the Committee's plan, arguing that thewas an outstanding example of architect Francis Greenway's work and one of the few remaining Governor Macquarie era buildings remaining in Sydney.
