Description
This collection contains a small selection of archives relating to the Hyde Park Barracks.
The Hyde Park Barracks was built under instruction from Governor Lachlan Macquarie and was designed by convict architect Francis Greenway. The building was constructed using skilled convict labour between 1817 and 1819 and was built to provide accommodation for up to 600 male government-assigned convicts.
The Barracks also served as a women’s immigration depot and asylum, and later law courts and government offices. The UNESCO World Heritage site is now a museum run by Museums of History NSW.
