Unique IDAG-0063DescriptionThe Municipalities Act 1858 allowed for the incorporation of areas of NSW (other than the City of Sydney which functioned under its own 1842 legislation) as municipalities with local government organisations. The approval process required a petition from at least fifty householders in an area. A new municipality could be created from an area previously unincorporated, or from an area within the boundary of an existing municipality.
Camperdown Municipal Council was formed in 1862 and in 1870 absorbed Cook Municipal Council. It was then amalgamated with Sydney Municipal Council from 1909 by the City of Sydney Boundaries Act 1908.
This agency has been created by the City of Sydney Archives to cover all the corporate and administrative offices of the Camperdown Municipal Council. Apart from the corporation (the group of Alderman headed by the Mayor) the suburban municipalities surrounding the City of Sydney usually employed only a Town Clerk and a handful of other administrative staff.
