Unique IDAG-0077DescriptionThe City Architect was responsible for the preparation of architectural plans for Council. Responsibility for the regulation of buildings in the city rested with the Building Surveyor (CA 76).
The first official City Architect was Albert Bond who was appointed on 16 June 1873. Previous to this John Henry Willson won the design for Sydney Town Hall and was superintendent of works from 1867-1872.
In 1881 the offices of Building Surveyor and City Architect were amalgamated when Thomas Sapsford was appointed City Architect and City Building Surveyor.

The City Architect Department abolished in 1929, and architectural positions downgraded. Garnsey was appointed City Engineer, which also incorporated position of City Building Surveyor and City Surveyor.
