City Cleansing Engineer's Department

Unique IDAG-0085DescriptionThis Department was responsible for cleansing of the City and disposal of refuse. This included collection and transportation of household and trade refuse, cleansing and removal of litter from public ways, cleansing of gullies, horse troughs, fountains, urinals, and unattended conveniences. It was also responsible for maintenance of the fleet of vehicles and the mechanical workshop at Wattle Street Depot.

Responsibility for the garbage destructors (where rubbish was burned) and for disposal by other means including dumping at sea, seems to have continued to lie with the City Surveyor.

It was separated from the City Surveyor's Department in 1925 as a result of the resignation of the City Engineer and City Surveyor Norman Weekes. The Lord Mayor wrote a minute claiming that the Department was too large to perform its duties properly and recommended that the Cleansing Engineer's Department be set up.

The Council was replaced by Commissioners on 1 January 1928. The Commissioners recommended that the Cleansing Engineer's Department be amalgamated with other departments to form CA 61, City Engineering and Building Surveyor's Department.CreationResolution of Council 20 January 1925AbolitionResolution of Council 29 August 1928
