Finance Committee I

Unique IDAG-0124DescriptionThe brief of the Finance Committee when it was established in 1843 was "to consider and control all matters connected with the Corporation expenditure and payments and perform all such duties relating to finance as the Council may from time to time require".

From 1854 to 1856 when Council was replaced by Commissioners there was no Committee structure in Council, but the Commissioners performed the duties of the Finance Committee. A new Council was elected in 1857 and they resolved on 27 April 1857 to form three standing committees, Finance and By-Laws, Water and Lighting, and Sewers and City Improvements. However, Finance and By-Laws appear to have operated as separate Committees.

By 1899, the scope of the Committee had been widened to include examination of all vouchers for payment of wages and accounts due, collection of all revenue, conduct of legal proceedings, and management of Council property.

As a result of the amalgamation of Sydney City Council and South Sydney Municipal Council under the Local Government (City of Sydney Boundaries) Act 1981, Council decided in January 1982 to reorganise its Standing Committees into eight bodies. The
