Unique IDAG-0127DescriptionThere are no extant minutes of the Market Committee but its reports to Council are contained in CRS 21.
This Committee was appointed to "enquire into the general management of the City Markets and Market Wharf with a view to ascertain how they are let - the pluralities of any of the holdings - the effect of the present mode of letting upon the interests of the community - the amount of the rents - the expenses connected with the management of the markets - and how far such management may be improved".
The Committee was not appointed as a standing Committee at this time but it was on 18 November 1844 for the year ending 1 November 1845. However, it was not reappointed with the other standing Committees on 17 November 1845.
The By-Laws Committee appears to have taken over the function of market management at this time. This was formalised on 10 November 1851 when the By-Laws Committee was renamed the By-Laws and Market Committee. This name lasted until the Council was replaced by Commissioners in 1854.
It seems to have been reconstituted as a special committee from time to time as required, as there are reports from the Market Committee in some of the volumes in CRS 21, Committee Reports. These reports date from 1850 to 1853, and 1859 to 1860.
